Marriage and Family Therapy

Hello, I’m Josh! I’m a Marriage and Family Therapy trainee and student at National University. While I may still be relatively new to mental health and have a lot to learn and grow professionally, there is a life principle that a mentor once told me many years ago that I have come to learn is true in every aspect of life. People do not really care how much you know until they know how much you care. It is a philosophy that I firmly believe in and one of the key fundamentals to any relationship.

However, my experiences, especially as an Army veteran, have taught me that there is more to just caring. It is not just that you care, that you want to help someone, or that you want to be there for them. Sometimes we can mean the best for someone but not be able to reach their inner person. True care is learning to understand someone at a deeper level, being able to walk beside them along whatever it is that they are going through, to share in the experience even if you have not experienced it yourself. In the military, we called it camaraderie. In therapy, it is the partnership and collaboration between therapist and client as they walk through this difficult journey together.

While I am by no means an expert at this, it is something I strive for always and what I can bring for you. Regardless of why you are here or what struggles you are facing, I hope that therapy helps redirect your life to a path that enables healing, renewed hope, and empowerment like it did for me.
